Topic Brainstorm

As I consider possible topics for my project, I feel the most drawn to Laura's suggestion based on my favorite place. My four topics are Costa Rican/Central American mythology, Irish mythology, Norse mythology, and mythology about music or musical instruments.

Costa Rican/Central American Mythology

Following this suggestion, I started researching Costa Rican myths and was surprised to see that I had actually heard of a few of them already. Some of them are particularly scary, like La Llorona and La Mona, which could be fun to collect as a spooky Halloween-time storybook, but even so, there are non-scary myths that interest me as well. It would be interesting to hear some of the stories and be able to connect them to my experiences in Costa Rica.

Irish Mythology

Because I have Irish heritage and have traveled to Ireland, I have always loved the culture and been interested in the literature. Last semester, I took a great class on Irish literature, and while I spent a great deal of time with Yeats, I enjoyed reading the myths and folktales that gave a real sense of the culture. I enjoyed reading about fairies, and how in Irish stories, they are often portrayed as creepy and mischievous creatures, rather than the cute "Tinkerbells" we commonly see today. I would enjoy getting into this more, and having a chance to read more Irish mythology.

Norse Mythology

Continuing with the idea of tracing mythology from places I've visited, I moved next to Norse mythology. I chose this as an option because I know there is a ton of information out there, as Norse mythology is so established. I also want to get a good share of classical mythology in this course, and this would allow me the opportunity to explore Norse mythology in more detail.

Mythology about Music/Musical Instruments

Throughout mythology, folktales and music are often connected. Music is just as powerful as storytelling in relaying a culture's beliefs and way of life. There are even stories of musical instruments  possessing special or magical powers and abilities. I think it could be fun to look for these stories and connect them by their magical elements, even though they may cross cultural boundaries.
